I have been following the discussions on most social media handles about the 5G network and it’s link to the dreaded Coronavirus Pandemic. The radiation it emits and it’s acclaimed harmful nature to humans. In my ignorant position, I questioned why humans will wake up to develop technologies that will destroy the whole human race?
Hearing people like Senator Dino Melaye at the forefront condemning the network, gave me so much worries and created the urge in me to dig deep.
As a computer scientist, I know that the 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G networks are all about increasing the speed of networks and making technologies faster and easier to use.
In my curiosity, I wanted to find out if there is more to the 5G network than what we know about the older versions and I had to immediately send chats to a renowned Computer Science Professor, Prof. Benjamin Aribisala, who happens to be my postgraduate supervisor and a very God-fearing man. Though I have known a lot of other senior colleagues, to me, this one will not deceive me and I asked, “Sir, Is 5G network harmful to humans, or will the disadvantages outweigh the advantages?”
I know my professor must have laughed at my ignorance and his response showed he was also following up on the discussions about 5G network, it’s link to Coronavirus and the talk about the harmful radiation it emits. His response also showed he is aware of the campaign by People like Senator Dino Melaye for underserved popularity and one Tunde who has been circulating audio messages telling Nigerians how 5G Network, which means Fifth Generation Network would infect people with Coronavirus and emit radiation that will cause people to die.
It was after reading the views of experts from a lot of institutions that was sent to me by my Professor, that I concluded as a supporter of Senator Dino Melaye, that he and his likes like Tunde, spoke extremely out of ignorance about the 5G network and the views could mislead the public since they were not based on empirical knowledge.
In response to Tunde who is circulating audio messages around condemning the 5G network, these erudite Professors and academics who are expert Physicists, had this to say:
Below are submissions of three professors of radiation physics at UI (University of Ibadan) copied from Science Faculty platform to debunk the narratives in the trending audio on 5G.
The man who made this audio message can be likened to someone who is interpreting a strange language he has never studied. He does not know what he’s saying. In simple language, the so called 5G (fifth generation) is a transmission at far higher frequency range than 4G. This feature implies transmission of greater quantum of energy (signal) per time, hence heavy data (such as images) will download faster and will be transmitted at higher resolution. Meanwhile this may require more booster antennas at closer ranges in order to travel very far because high frequency signals get attenuated faster than low frequency signals. In short 5G will be able to accommodate larger data than 4G.
Generally, people have always displayed some fear each time a new technology arises. The fear attributed to mobile technology is that the signals (waves) are injurious to humans. Meanwhile all mobile signals mostly fall within microwaves (extreme end of radio waves) which are non ionizing radiations. Ionizing radiations like x-rays and gamma rays have far higher frequencies and exposure to the human body and may be injurious. However, they are not used for mobile telecommunication.
The man’s use of the word ‘radioactive’ reveals that he is completely ignorant of what he claims to be explaining. The word Radioactive is from Radioactivity which is a completely different phenomenon from radio wave. Technology is more than speculation. It is a product of basic scientific theories.
Just look at the confidence with which he was talking nonsense. I was just wondering how I would present a rejoinder in a language that we will all understand and without sounding like a know it all person.
You have captured all with the appropriate words. It is now up to anybody to allow him/herself to be misled. God bless you richly, my brother.
I really don’t understand why a simple scientific matter would be so overstretched. Simple basic physics which our Prof. Farai has laid to rest for us as a guru in Radiation business. Use E = hf from modern Physics and the frequencies or the wavelengths of the regions for the G’s, what amount of energy do you arrive at ? Just like Prof. Farai said, mixing up non-ionizing radiation source to be Radioactive is a simple QED ignoramus!!
I hope we will all understand the nonsense in this video from this simple explanation. Communication networks of whatever G, for now and in the near future, are generally in frequencies of the order of Giga Hertz (GHz or 10⁹ Hz). Thank God the video revealed this much. Meanwhile, the bulk of energy from the sun (solar radiation) is in the UV frequency range (i.e.10¹⁵ Hz). Now I ask, how can mankind, who has been bathing under the shower of UV radiation from the sun over the ages, now be under any threat of a radiation of energy over 1 million times less energy than UV radiation? That is one point.
Most importantly for us on this platform, there is no application of a technology that is not under any regulatory control by international bodies made up of experts from all parts of the globe. Most of us have one thing or the other to do with such bodies as WHO, ICNIRC, UNSCEAR, etc. If they are unaware of the fears expressed in this video or have been compromised, then we are all guilty. We should stop attending their programmes.
With these quotations from very known experts, may all those already being misled by my Senator Dino Melaye and his likes to please, not entertain any fear. 5G network is not harmful, it does not emit harmful radiation and cannot transmit Coronavirus. After all, Iran is a country with no 5G network but has a lot of deaths and infections from Coronavirus. The Condemnation of 5G network and the campaign against it, is an economic war between the West as led by the United States and the East as led by China, the creators of 5G network.
