Long before the 2019 general elections, the gaiety and laughter that were a proud part of the social media activists that made Goodluck Jonathan win the dubious appellation of The Most Cursed President in the world, have dried up.
Many of them, young, some, brilliant but young and hurriedly promoted as professors in foreign universities, without maturity, tried to outdo each other on who can best curse or insult the then president, are now regretting their acute lack of analytical skills to examine the raw intelligence based data provided on who they were cursing, and who their new found hero was.
Activists on the side of President Jonathan were calm even in the face of extreme provocation as they laid down in black and white, how Jonathan had done good on the economy, national cohesion, press freedom, deepening democracy, the rule of law, making the country the number one destination for foreign direct investments, Nigeria becoming the fastest growing economy and the biggest economy in Africa, etc.
Those that knew his major opponent, Major General Muhammadu Buhari explained how the economy went comatose during his earlier military coup that truncated democracy and the rule of law.
But the giddy activists mocked and mocked, insisting that even if it were bread label that Buhari presented as certificate, he was their irrevocable choice.
Goodluck Jonathan’ s former aide, Pastor Reno Omokri has pointed out the difference between his ex-boss and President Muhammadu Buhari, after he saw groups of armed personnel teargas protesters, Monday at #RevolutionNow march.
Reno via his Facebook page wrote, “Let me tell you how tolerant Jonathan was.During “OccupyNaija”, musicians and actors performed for the crowd. “APC chieftains paid for caterers to feed protesters. Each morning Lagos State Government cleaners prepared the venue. #OccupyNaija organisers had TOTAL FREEDOM under Jonathan.
“El-Rufai was on Channels TV INSULTING Jonathan DAILY. General Buhari was freely instigating Nigerians and publicly asked citizens to learn from the Egyptian REVOLUTION. “Nollywood stars were at Ojota. Opposition CPC politicians LIED that Jonathan traveled to South Africa while Nigeria was burning and their supporters labeled him a BLOOD SUCKING DEMON!
“Wole Soyinka called GEJ a NEBUCHADNEZZAR DICTATOR! Yet, Jonathan NEVER once stopped their protests”.
Today the difference is clear. Omoyele Sowore is in DSS custody, the man whose organization was often accused of instigating hate by manufacturing unfounded allegations and outright lies against Jonathan.
Little wonder, Governor Nyesom Wike diplomatically asked that his state, Rivers state remain off limits to Sowore’s RevolutionNow protests, probably because he is a Jonathan loyalist.
Curiously, one of Sowore’s comrades in the denigration of a peace and freedom loving Jonathan, Kayode Ogundamisi has issued an advisory post against the Campaign, listing out the dangers involved in joining it. They seem to have fallen apart, after bringing Jonathan down to enthrone Buhari that perfected the art of shutting the mouth of the opposition and abridging their freedom, while serving as a military dictator.
Amazingly, support has come to Sowore in detention from Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, former spokesman for the Goodluck Jonathan campaign organization who equally received the worst mockery from Sowore’s online medium, Sahara Reporters. He wrote this Monday morning that
“Every Nigerian has the legitimate and constitutional right to protest and demonstrate peacefully in a democracy. It is NOT an act of treason to march against the President and to protest about the insecurity in the country.
The publisher of Saharareporters and a presidential candidate in the just- concluded presidential elections, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, expressed his desire to demonstrate peacefully against you (President Muhammadu Buhari) and your Government.
He chose to call his protest a “revolution” in order to emphasise his zeal and the importance of the event.
He has no arms, he has not threatened to conduct an armed struggle or engage in an armed insurrection or to kill anyone so this can only be a “revolution” in name and by words.
I warned the country about you before and during the presidential election in 2015 but they would not listen.
People like President Olusegun Obasanjo, General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Chief Ernest Shonekan, Professor Wole Soyinka, Sheik Ibrahim El Zak Zaky, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senator Bukola Saraki, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, Mr. Femi Falana SAN, Chief Dele Momodu and many others supported Buhari”, Femi Fani-Kayode went on, “but I, by divine insight and prophetic perception, saw through” Buhari, “So did my friends and brothers Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Governor Ayo Fayose, Lt. Colonel Abubakar ‘Dangiwa’ Umar (rtd), Pastor Bosun Emmanuel and a few of our fathers in the Lord like Bishop David Oyedepo, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Prophet T.B. Joshua and a number of others”.
He continued thus in his essay that “If anyone should have an axe to grind with Omoyele Sowore that person is me.
He has never been my friend, I have never met him and I have never liked him.
He has offended me on many occasions and he has also offended many of my closest friends, political associates, family members and relatives.
Worse still his website, Saharareporters, which has a massive reach all over the world, has slandered, libelled, vilified and defamed me and mine more than any other media outlet in the world and has consistently done so since 2005!
There is no love lost between us but that does not mean that I will remain silent, sit back and gloat when his rights are being violated or when he is suffering persecution from a Government that can, at best, be described as paranoid, vicious, cruel, desperate, mendacious, relentless and dangerous and, at worse, genocidal, murderous and evil.
When I was detained in a specially built Boko Haram terrorist facility (which only had Boko Haram suspects and convicts in it) at Kuje prison in 2016 and my life was purposely put in danger Sowore, his Sahara Reporters and some of his colleagues and activist friends made mockery of me.
I was reliably informed that some of them were hoping and praying that I would be killed or maimed by the terrorists whilst I was there. I have little doubt that that was Buhari’s intention and desire as well and it would have surely come to pass had the Lord not been with me.
Yet I will not repay Sowore in the same coin. Only fools mock others when they are going through hard times, challenges, difficulties and travails and this is especially so when they are going through those travails and hard times for a noble and worthy cause.
It is enough vindication that the same people that he was once in bed with, that he once collaborated with, that he helped bring to power and that he once wined and dined with are now humiliating, demonising and terrorising him too.”
