When Nigeria’s secret police, (DSS) operatives were making moves to arrest the little known human rights activist, Chido Onumah, little did they know that he was being made into a larger than life personality, a tonic that was set to raise his profile and boost inquiries about his new book.
The Department of State Security Services (DSS) had arrested the human rights activist, Dr. Chido Onumah and convener of the African Centre for Media & Information Literacy (AFRICMIL) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on his return from a trip abroad. The DSS claims that he was arrested based on ” credible information” that his tee-shirt was capable of causing public disaffection or disorder.
Onumah, an activist and author of the book “We are all Biafrans”, had just completed his PhD course and was returning to Nigeria when he was picked up.
The statement by AFRICMIL, which was signed by Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, said it was alarmed over the arrest of its Coordinator, Mr Chido Onumah, by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS)
The statement said: “Onumah was picked up at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on his return from a trip abroad.
“AFRICMIL condemns in strong terms the unjustifiable arrest of Onumah and demands his immediate and unconditional release.
“Waylaying law-abiding citizens should not be turned into the preoccupation of an entire security outfit.”
A source revealed to newsmen that the operatives picked him up, owing to an inscription on his T-shirt, suspected to have reflected the title of his book.
That way DSS, managed to execute an
excellent work with the free and effective publicity for the book “We Are All Biafrans”.
Before you stepped in, dear DSS – need I say “as usual” – we had never heard the name of the author or the book before. At least I had never heard of it.
Guess what is trending now?
Guess who is responsible for that trend?
Clap for yourself !
Hopefully the author will be gracious enough to include you all in the acknowledgment page of the second edition of the book.
Until then, keep creating heroes out of ordinary Nigerians who are just going about surviving the hot mess that is that 59 year old agbaya. They sure need the push you always succeed in giving them.
