When the impressive team from the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria visited Oyo State Governor’s office in Ibadan, there was palpable excitement from onlookers who know the capacity of the action governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde.

Like all of the cities in Nigeria that suffer a deficit in decent and affordable housing, Oyo state may have a quick start at solving the knotty problem of affordable housing, because of the sheer personality of its youthful and ebullient governor.

The last Nigerian leader to make a go at solving the problem in his own little way was late president Shehu Shagari, who built housing estates in all the then 19 States of the federation. Many of the estates are either called Shagari Estate or Federal low cost estate.

Former Lagos State Governor, Lateef Jakande was also one of the few governors in Nigerian history to provide housing.

With a burgeoning population from about 40 million people in the 50s to the present 200 million people in 2019, construction of decent and affordable housing has not even attempted to scratch 30 percent of the problem. And with thieving politicians who attempt at stealing land from ordinary people and from government reserves as seen recently in allegations coming from Imo state in South East Nigeria, and recent revelations about an unnamed former governor in Oyo State, the problem with further compounded to the discomfiture of the citizenry.

On the 15th August, 2019, Olatunji K Ayoola was appointed by Governor Seyi Makinde to oversee the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, (including Forestry). A day later while interacting with Directors in the ministry, especially the forestry department, he found out that a former government pillaged Oyo State forest resources by awarding prime 6,000 hectares at Gambari Forest Reserve and 20,000 hectares at Ọ̀pàrà Forest Reserve for themselves.
These illegal allocations have now been revoked and Seyi Makinde is conserving the people’s land for the people. Partnering with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria is aimed at providing decent and affordable housing for the people of the State.

The team that came to visit Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde included the General Manager Treasury Services, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Mr Kabiru Adeniyi Yagboyaju and the Group Head, National Housing Fund, Mr Abubakar Musa Omar.
