Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu has accused former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of planning to overturn the victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki at the September 2020 governorship election through the Judiciary, just like what transpired in Imo State.
Shaibu during an empowerment program for Afemai Youths in Ogbona and Jattu respectively at the weekend reaffirmed confidence in the judiciary and President Muhammadu Buhari to protect the nation’s democracy and the collective will of Edo people.
According to the Deputy Governor, Comrade Oshiomhole at a public function at his Iyamho residence during the yuletide declared that he was instrumental to the Supreme Court victory of Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State and will do the same to upturn the popular victory of Obaseki in Edo State.
Shaibu expressed disappointment over Oshiomhole’s vituperation on the clear victory of Obaseki, stressing that making unguarded utterances to indict the integrity of the Judiciary and to redeem his larger-than-life public image remains ridiculous.
The Deputy Governor, in a statement made available to newsmen by his Media Aide, Benjamin Atu, urged Edo people, especially the youths to take their destiny into their hands by securing Nigeria democracy and the political future of young people.
He further charged youths to desist from making themselves available as instruments of destruction but rather add value to their lives, reassuring that the Edo State Government is committed to assisting and collaborating with young people in the state to make Edo State great again.
According to the Deputy Governor, “The Nigeria Judiciary is known to be amongst the best in the world, therefore, Oshiomhole’s utterance is a mere crying of a beaten baby and he must be made aware that Edo is not Imo State.
“Now that he has vowed to test the collective will of the good people of Edo State by attempting to subvert their will through a questionable judicial arrangement, he will obviously not to be tolerated by the managers of our judiciary.”
He added: “The victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki is a victory for Nigeria’s democracy and it was the first election in Nigeria where all political parties came together to vote for one candidate for the overall development of the state.”
“Oshiomhole desirability to create tension to destabilize the state and make it ungovernable should be resisted by the good people of Edo State.”
It will be recalled that Adams Oshiomole was once accused of combative acts aimed at invading Nigeria’s Senate in a bid to forcefully impeach the then Senate President, Bukola Saraki in August 2018 after APC, his party’s loss at the Senate leadership election loss.
He had then as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC),
given Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki a final warning to either resign honourably as Senate President or face impeachment, saying he can no longer lead the senate since he is now with the minority party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. This was on the heels of a failed invasion of the upper chamber by armed operatives of the DSS led by its then Director, Lawan Daura, allegedly under the influence and instructions of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
Oshiomhole, who had then addressed a press conference at the Party’s National Secretariat, took Saraki to the cleaners for allegedly putting self interest first ahead of national interest and affirmed that he will be impeached according to law and democratic norms if he fails to voluntarily step down.
Saraki repeatedly said he has no plans to resign and justified his stay in office as Senate President after defecting from the ruling APC.
Excerpts from Oshiomhole’s address in 2018:
We decided to call for this press conference basically to respond to issues raised by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki during his press conference. It is important that we respond to some of the issues he canvassed, so that the public is not misled into turning villains into heroes and twisting the facts that are not hidden to the Nigerian public. It is important that we help the Nigerian public by refreshing their memories.
The Senate President raised the issues of the fact that he has always acted not on the basis of his own personal interest, but that he has always acted on the basis of national interest. The truth is that it is doubtful if the Senate President has ever acted either in the National interest or in the interest of his own political party before his defection recently.
Without going back to ancient history, it is important to look at how Senator Bukola Saraki became the President of the Senate. He decided, clearly, against the party position to enter into a deal with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and got a faction of the PDP, taking advantage of the fact that majority of the APC senators were holding a meeting at the International Conference Centre to resolve the issue of leadership of the senate and other principal officers that are expected to be produced by the ruling party with majority senators. Because he has put his personal interest over and above the interest of the party, he went into alliance with the PDP and conceded the position of Deputy Senate President to the opposition in order to obtain their support for him to become the Senate President. So, for the first time in our democratic history in Nigeria, we had a situation whereby, whereas the APC had majority of Senators, it went on to elect a PDP person as Deputy Senate President.”
