In a surprise move by the All Progressives Congress, APC led House of Assembly, the Speaker of the Plateau State House, Honourable Peter Azi was impeached this morning at Plenary. He watched glumly as a party man rose to move an impeachment motion against him citing anti legislative acts. It was obvious that the plot was cooked outside before the House convened because almost all APC members supported the motion.
Peter Ajang Azi from Jos North-West Constituency became the Speaker in June 2015.
The Deputy Speaker mounted the seat without wasting time and asked for nominations to elect a successor. Joshua Madaki emerged overwhelmingly as the new Speaker. He is the Assemblyman representing Jos East constituency. The tenure of the current house ends in May 2019.
Many Plateau watchers say that there is more to the surprise impeachment than is immediately apparent. Many see Peter Azi As close to the state governor, Simon Bako Lalong.
