A gubernatorial aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, seeking to wrestle power from Plateau State APC sitting Governor, Simon Lalong, Engr. Ponyah Ibrahim says if elected the Governor of Plateau State come 2019, he will remain focused in addressing the sectarian challenges bedeviling the state.

Engr. Ponyah who disclosed this during his recent visit to the PDP secretariat in Jos to declare his intention for the candidacy of the Party, added that he will take the education sector very seriously.

“Again, attention will continue to be placed on the recruitment, deployment, and retention of teachers. There will be provision of teaching and other different learning materials while advocating infrastructural development.

” In addition, the plan will seek to ensure that the efficiency and effectiveness of education as well as the required skills development is addressed towards attaining delivery through curriculum development. Such improvements will be attained through a clear management and governance of institutions and other community involvement, civil society and various private sector engagements. Moreover, particular attention will be placed on teacher availability in the rural areas plus specialized scholarships for science and technology students. ”

He further said that, “the victory of our State depends on the provision of infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, water supply, sewage evacuation, drainage networks, electricity, industries, and communication system. We shall upgrade the road transport systems to accommodate more goods and people in an efficient and affordable rate. We shall also engage the federal government towards construction of additional bypasses and ring roads to reduce traffic congestions in the city centre and open up more tracts of land for development.

“For energy, the major goal is to ensure that there is a higher availability of reliable, affordable and environmentally sound energy. Such kind of energy will help to sustain social and economic development in a given area. On the other hand, a major objective is to ensure that there is an increase in electrification levels mostly in the rural areas by 70 percent on average.

“Under my leadership, we shall increase access to clean water and strive to mobilize and manage all natural water sources for better development. We will develop pilot schemes that take full responsibility of collecting runoff and wastewater for treatment and recycling to bring our people into awareness and to embrace modern ways of managing water resources.

” To address the current housing deficit, especially for the middle class, the plan will create an enabling environment to provide affordable, quality and adequate housing to the majority of the citizens. The project will also encourage Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the housing development and construction of ancillary facilities. We will create cost- friendly housing for the citizens.

“For Urban Renewal, the objective is to renew urban settlements across the State. The strategy shall be to rehabilitate public infrastructure and housing and enhance spatial planning”.
