Governor Godwin Obaseki, Edo State.

It was reported that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has so far failed to convince the three aspirants on its platform, to step aside for Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, ahead of their primaries, ThisDay reports. That was before latest reports reached The Oasis Reporters.

But let’s proceed to consider first, the earlier report that Gideon Ikhine, Ogbeide-Ihama and Kenneth Imasuagbon being the three men that were screened and cleared by the party for the primary had refused to shift grounds after Obaseki’s decision to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) for PDP, changed the complexion of the game.

Obaseki defected to the opposition party along with his deputy, Hon. Philip Shuaibu.

The PDP primary was initially scheduled to hold last weekend, but has now been postponed until tomorrow, because of the new developments.

Ahead of Tuesday’s primary, Obaseki has met with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state; Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Aminu Tambuwal and the Governor of Rivers State Nyesom Wike, to strategize on how to get him the ticket.

It is understood that a meeting that held Saturday night between key PDP leaders and the three governorship aspirants ended in a deadlock.

Imasuagbo, Ogbeide-Ihama and Ikhine have so far refused to yield to pressure from every quarter.

“Yes, there is pressure from them. But it is not about pressure, but about doing the right thing in line with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, due process and the Electoral Act.

“It is disappointing and a big shame in Edo State and the entire nation and it portends danger for the country and the party. Nigerians should rise up against what is happening. We are not in the jungle; it is not a do-or-die affair, but about the process. It is totally unacceptable,” Imasuagbon said.

Latest developments however point out that one of the aspirants has made room for Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Engr. Ikhine’s shift may soften the grounds for more fruitful negotiations and horse trading ahead of super Tuesday’s PDP primary election.

A review of the 2019 elections results indicates that the PDP has been gaining strength ever since the APC gave them an unsettling blow.

Look at the results below and understand why the PDP cleared contestants were hardening their positions, before Governor Obaseki threw his hat into the ring.

PRESIDENTIAL (Oshiomole was then the party leader, with Obaseki as Edo State Governor).

APC: 267, 842

PDP: 275, 691

SENATORIAL

EDO CENTRAL

PDP: 56, 048

APC: 49, 168

EDO SOUTH

PDP 135, 588

APC 121, 957

EDO NORTH

APC 117, 783

PDP 80, 752

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

PDP: 4

APC: 5

The figures show that the PDP was the party to beat. But managing the entry of Obaseki against the bedrock of the sympathy he garnered after the humiliation APC’s Adams Oshiomole dished to him, can be a game changer.
