Former Senate President, David Mark gets the nod from the Youths of the North Central geopolitical zone to run for the presidency.

Opinion leaders among the youths of the Middle Belt region of Nigeria, grouped as part of the larger northern region of Nigeria have agreed in separate chats with The Oasis Reporters that the invitation extended to the former Senate president, Mr. David Bonaventure Alechenu Mark to appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC was nothing but an attempt to muscle and intimidate the distinguished senator away from his rumoured presidential bid, especially as his party, the Peoples Democratic Party has zoned the ticket to the northern part of the country.

One of the youth leaders said that the middle belt part of the larger north has always been used and dumped by the far north at elections with nothing to show for the region.
“We the minority tribes of the north who are largely Christians, animists and liberal Muslims won’t take it any more.
“Each time a ticket for the north is given, the Fulani Muslims always appropriate and exercise it for the north, and unfortunately, they do not pursue any pan Nigerian agenda, but pursue a narrow Fulani selfish agenda”, the leader who did not want his name in print continued,
“Just look at the list of all the elected leaders from the north for the nation. It has always been Fulani Muslims. There was President Shehu Shagari in 1979.
President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2007, and now President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
Are they the only tribe in the north? The north alone has over 250 ethnic groups!
Worse still, the Fulani leaders have always served with a monumental lack of distinction, leading Nigeria backwards”.

In his further analysis, he said, “Shagari introduced population and land mass as the basis for revenue allocation, yet despite the huge oil revenue gotten from the impoverished Niger Delta, the north remains the poorest region in the country, scoring the least indices in education, health care and agriculture “.
“Take a look at California state in the United States of America”, he went on, “With their desert land mass, they became one of the largest food growers and exporters in the world, netting over $50 billion annually, twice the Nigerian annual budget, from the agriculture value chain sector alone while the Fulani believe In their open nomadic grazing, appropriating the land of the Indigenous middle belters they met in Nigeria since their jihadi in 1805. Worse still, they are cleansing the Indigenous tribes with automatic weapons and destabilizing their sedentary lifestyle, with the government doing nothing about middle belt lives.
Therefore we won’t take it.
They must allow for democratic space to play”.

Meanwhile, David Mark has issued a press release on the EFCC invitation thus :

EFCC Invitation: I am a law abiding citizen………….Mark

Our attention has been drawn to media reports wherein it was reported that former President of the Senate Sen. David Mark was quizzed by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over some alleged financial transactions.

To set the record straight, Sen. Mark was invited by the EFCC via a letter addressed to the National Assembly to answer questions on the 2015 presidential election campaign funds as it concerned Benue state.

As a law abiding citizen, Sen. Mark honoured the invitation.

Curiously, they also alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) paid over N2bilion into the National Assembly’s account which he, as the then President of the Senate,  allegedly shared among the 109 Senators (including PDP, ACN, and ANPP) in 2010. Again, to the best of his knowledge, Sen. Mark is not aware of such transaction. This simply did not make sense to any right thinking member of the society.  Sen. Mark wondered why anybody would think that PDP will pay money into National Assembly account. He however clarified all the issues raised before returning home.

Sen. Mark believes in due process and rule of law. He has maintained a clean record of public service over the years and will continue to uphold the highest standard of conduct expected of public servants.

Sen. Mark’s house has since become a pilgrimage of sort to Politicians across party lines, friends and well-wishers identifying with him at this moment.

He however appealed to his supporters, friends and associates to remain calm and see his current travails as a price he has to pay for leadership.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is the first and only official statement from the office of Sen. Mark on this issue.
