In less than forty eight hours, results would begin to filter in over how Nigerians voted in the 2019 General elections. Gombe State would be bidding their superlative two term governor, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, PhD, bye. He will be retiring as governor after a successful tenure. What Gombe State would lose in an exemplary governor, Gombe North Senatorial zone would gain in quality representation.
Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo is the major contender for the Senatorial Seat, to give it’s people the quality representation that they deserve.
One of the outstanding aspects of the Dankwambo governance style, is his fiscal prudence and discipline. He is a money manager par excellence. And that is to be expected, having risen to the apogee of his accounting profession by emerging as the Accountant General of the Federation. He left the post to emerge as the governor of the North East State.
As modest as the financial allocation to Gombe State was, he managed it well, therefore Gombe State remained solvent throughout, and the framework for continuity in fiscal discipline has already been embedded in the state economy.
With less than seven months to the end of his tenure on May 29, 2019, Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo was seen confidently kick-starting the construction of roads in a part of Gombe, with enough resources to see them to completion. This comes at a time when some states had spent their economy into unmitigated debt.
Dankwambo’s devotion to education remains unmatched. He it was that converted his family house to a school, just so that a few more children could gain access to education before the massive Infrastructural work he had commenced would be completed.
And Dankwambo has a commitment to the girl child education, a rare phenomenon in the North of the past, that has seen now seen reason not to confine women to the other room only.
“The educated woman is a resource for the general well being and prosperity of Society”, he often says, and he has shown uncommon commitment to the development of infrastructure for girl child education.
Writing on the “Necessity of Continuing Dankwambo’s Remarkable Political Journey (IV)”, Mr. Abu-Ubaida Ibrahim Kuna, SSA to Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, ascribes the passion for education found in Dankwambo to the rich academic background of the ebullient governor.
He went further to say that on Dankwambo’s “assumption of office as the third executive governor of Gombe State, he decided to place education as the first, second and third priority programme of his administration”.
Dankwambo acknowledged that because of tradition and religion, people tend to shy away from a lot of western education to some extent, especially in the northern part of Nigeria. Therefore, he took the campaign towards propagation of access to education, especially the girl child education to a higher level.
He believes in the importance of educating a woman in any household and community, as mother, home keeper and caregiver.
As a reward to the contributions and initiatives of Dankwambo, school enrolment in Gombe State increased to about 62% from the 23% where the governor met it in 2011, while examination pass rate increased from zero to 72% for girls.
With education as the priority of his administration’s attention, Governor Dankwambo has gradually eliminated abject poverty, poor personal hygiene, child abuse and sundry anti-social activities, especially political thuggery in the region.”
Gombe people give kudos to Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo. The unforgettable governor of Gombe State, as he readies himself to leave office in May 2019, and by the grace of Almighty Allah, through the votes of Gombe North citizens, prepare for the Senate.
