Despite all the political grandstanding, Oyo State governor, Abiola Isiaka Ajimobi may have to wait until February 23, 2019 to know how his lowly gift of the local garri and groundnut cake called Kulikuli often prepared in the North in most cases, under fly infested environments is acceptable to the voters in his state or not.
Ajimobi is running again to represent Oyo South in the Senate after his unprecedented two term tenure as governor. Ajimobi, who came from the Senate in 2011 to run for governor, wants to go back there as a career politician, having nothing else of interest to pursue, besides politics.
Pundits describe his government as pedestrian and lackluster, as he is leaving the state, with a very huge debt burden, because he seemed to have had little initiative in growing an economy. Civil servants have been owed several months of outstanding wages, which may have to be transferred as liabilities to the succeeding administration, come May 29, 2019.
To charm hungry voters into returning him to the Senate, Governor Ajimobi has offered them Kulikuli and packaged Garri in small sachets, believing that that is what it would take to win.
In addition to that, he and Party leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu were said to have railroaded Bayo Adelabu with the popular Penkelesi legacy as gubernatorial candidate, in the hope that the magical name of Bayo’s grandfather who was a popular Ibadan population until about 60 years ago when he died would revive the APC’s hope of a good home run.
Adeola Fayehun, Nigeria’s international internet Television host, dedicated a slot of her “Keeping It Real” TV program to lampoon the last minute rush to commission projects and entice voters into returning the APC in Oyo state, back to power.
After showing images of the Ajimobi packaged Garri (a local staple) and the Kulikuli, local Ibadan women were heard heaping curses on Ajimobi for the cheap pre- election gift. One of the women said angrily, “Ajimobi, may you drink garri till you *** “, as a sign of her frustration.
Pundits had wondered if it would not have been better, had Ajimobi made Oyo state prosperous and completed the water works expansion, which would have been more dignifying than sachet garri. Less affluent citizens have been drawing water from deep wells in Oyo State like their ancestors in these modern days as a result of a lack of a robust water policy as is available in modern northern cities like Kano, Gombe, Sokoto, Maiduguri, etc, where state governments provide modern amenities for their citizenry.
The entire South West is like Oyo state, where only the rich sink boreholes indiscriminately, exposing the region to the risk of earth tremors due to a lack of a robust clean water policy.
