Kabukabu operators kick in to fill void, earn cash
The Ondo state government has announced the suspension of both the National Union of Road transport workers, NURTW and the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, RTEAN owing to the hiccups the transport sector is experiencing and the disruptions it is causing to the economy and the Ondo society at large as a state.
“This suspension is due to their menace in all parts of the state. They increased transport fares and blamed it on the government whereas the state government was not even aware of what they had planned”, our source in Akure told us.
Most commuters found themselves stranded owing to the general confusion that has pervaded the issue since yesterday.
As early as 6.00am today, many workers and traders were seen talking in few scattered groups on Oba Adesida road while walking to their various places of work just as some waited for benevolent car owners to give them free rides to their destinations.
Some enterprising car owners have cashed in on the situation to earn quick cash by temporarily converting their cars into cabbies to ease the pains of commuters as well as earn some bucks.
These are variously called “kabukabu” in the local parlance at Akure the state capital.
