Nathaniel Bassey.

The news has been out since that Nigerian gospel music minister, Nathaniel Bassey has been invited to Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration Prayer Breakfast on January 20, 2025 and this is a pleasant surprise for the Nigerian and Nigerians.

Nigerian music has been entering America’s Billboard charts for years, at times even topping the charts at No.1 and this is not to be taken lightly, especially in the Gospel Music category.

One major promoter of the arts, music, books and movies in America has been Barack Obama. Everyone pays attention each time he releases his own top ten music pieces each month or top movies for the month, including his top ten pick of books, and it helps the artiste, album or book to soar.
Luckily for music, president Obama does include some from Nigeria.

Back home on the African continent, making a living as a musician is a struggle, compared to the music industry in the US where most musicians really make it big.

Music gets little support in the country. That is apart from the problem of piracy and others, most Nigerians would want their children in other production industries rather than the music industry.

Reading the iconic novel, Things Fall Apart by Prof. Chinua Achebe, one would notice that the Umuofia community would rather cheer with Okonkwo, a notable wrestler and Yam grower than his father, who was disdainful of hard and arduous work. He preferred to blow his flute. It didn’t matter that he had mountains of debts to pay because he was very poor. Playing music didn’t fetch much.
But that was Nigeria of old, even from the days before it became a country.

In America, music is big business, especially if the musician can make a hit.

Period! As Lionel Richie once said.

Therefore the excitement that Nathaniel Bassey is going to play at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington as part of the Inauguration events for the Swearing in of the incoming American President, Donald Trump is a big honor and also a big deal.

The excitement all over Africa is palpable.

The question everyone seems to be asking is, would Bassey sing a newly composed song for Trump?

Some old ones are here, and they helped promote Nathaniel Bassey to the international limelight.

One of Bassey’s songs of Thanksgiving to the Almighty for his grace and mercy is rendered in Igbo language and English.

Listen to Imela:

While Imela is sung in Igbo the major language spoken in the eastern part of Nigeria, Onise Iyanu that expresses thanks to the God of Wonders is in Yoruba language, spoken in the South West of Nigeria.
