When President Barack Obama wrote on his X (Twitter) handle that “with summer winding down, I wanted to share some songs that I’ve been listening to lately – and it wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix. I hope you find something new to listen to!” a Nigerian singer, Tems got extremely lucky.

After 21 hours, the post on his music list had 37 million views, 9.2k comments, 29k retweets and 195k likes. Quite phenomenal, you’d say.
And here’s Tems, the phenomenal Nigerian born singer that President Barack Obama added to his playlist:
Tems is Nigeria’s export to the world, taking Afrobeat pioneered by Fela Anikulapo Kuti and giving it another global footing.
Tems was nominated for the Grammy awards in 2022 in the Afrobeat category.
Garhe Osiobe wrote that Afrobeat and Afrobeats, although related, are quite distinct.
“ Afrobeats is the genre that emerged when West African pop music became cool. Its origins coincide with the media liberalisation that accompanied the “final” wave of democratisation in Africa from 1999. More than this, it is a convenient term for Europe to refer to music coming out of Africa, distinct from Euro-American pop.
Afrobeat, on the other hand, is what Nigerian music icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti called his invention, which blended jazz, funk, psychedelic rock and traditional West African chant and rhythms in the early 1970s. Afrobeat typically bears messages of liberation”.
With the mention by Barack Obama, Tems moments globally is going to be further enhanced and the world would become her pedestal.
