A Jos based human rights lawyer Jos, Barrister Gyang Zi, has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to seek the Presidency in 2023 for the sake of peaceful coexistence and prosperity in the country.
Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is still eligible to seek one more term in office, going by Nigeria’s constitution. He was actually seeking for it when he was defeated by current president Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Army general.
Barrister Zi, who bemoaned the current state of insecurity in the country said the former President is capable of uniting Nigerians and observing the rule of law.
Zi who addressed the press in Jos said the country needed Jonathan now, citing a pattern of appointment of persons into government offices, infrastructural development schemes and his general attitude towards the country at large.
He said that Jonathan believes so much in Nigeria and that his patriotism informed his willingness to concede power in 2015.
Zi said: “We are advocating for a Jonathan presidency in 2023 based on the following achievements while he was in office. Nigeria was listed among the fastest-growing economies in the world; diversification of the economy by developing the agricultural and mining sectors the introduction of the BVN; and Single Treasury Account as a systematic way of fighting corruption.
“He came up with educational reforms, including the establishment of additional universities; granting licences to private persons and bodies to establish private universities and other institutions; the establishment of Almajiri schools in the north etc.
“His efforts toward fighting insecurity despite extreme sabotage by opposition and the refusal of the USA to sell arms to Nigeria, including the international community, as well as conducting a free and fair election in addition to relinquishing power in order to save the lives and properties of Nigerians…”
Barrister Zi suggested that the presidency be zoned to the South-East which has been marginalized for long in case Jonathan refuses to contest.
Many Nigerians who were at the Press conference marvelled at Barrister Zi’s selflessness in requesting for another Jonathan tenure, or the presidency of a South East citizen, despite the fact that the Middle Belt region to which he belongs has not had the chance on behalf of the north which has always been held by the Muslim north, completely ignoring the Christian Community in the north.
