Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan visited Mali on an international peace mission.

The year was 2015. The stakes where high. A sitting president, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was running for reelection that he would spend only four years, then compulsorily handover.

The north said no, Goodluck had no right to contest the election. He must step down.

The man refused and went about his campaigns, rejecting that humiliating circumstance, the hate, the campaign of calumny, the denigrations, the outright lies and the threats.

He traveled to northern states like Bauchi, Katsina, Sokoto etc. Wherever he went to, the peaceful man was pelted with stones, some of his campaign vehicles were set on fire. There was anarchy everywhere. Northerners were hostile. Majority of his northern friends abandoned him. And also betrayed him.

Bereaved and saddened former president Jonathan receives smiling northern politicians. Watch Jonathan’s unsmiling face while with visiting former Senate President, Bukola Saraki (right) who is in contention to fly the PDP ticket. Former minister of sports, Alhaji Abdullahi is with him on the left.

Political powerhouses like Alhaji (Dr) Bukola Saraki, former governor of Kwara State, former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and many other prominent PDP politicians all abandoned the party to team up with General Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC. The whole idea was to deal with Jonathan and hand him a humiliatingly crushing defeat.

They succeeded. But Jonathan did not wait for them to come and mock him at home. Like they say, never let your mockers see you cry. Never let them. Never.

So before they could finish counting the ballots, Jonathan called Buhari and congratulated him. He had graciously accepted defeat. He needed to go home.

What a man, many people said.

That move saved a nation from strife and the threat of war. Jonathan saved his people from slaughter because security reports revealed the stockpile of armaments and the importation of mercenaries from all over West Africa.

Well, less than a few years later, those that destroyed the PDP have all come back with entitlement syndrome. They didn’t even mind the people who stayed loyally behind, gently nursing the bruised party back to life. The decampees want the power in their hands. Four years ago, it was given to them.
And they lost.

Four years after that it is now the turn of the South to take a shot, they want the party Constitution jettisoned to enable them run again under a consensus agreement and a mythical 11 million votes waiting to be grabbed by them and them alone.

But that is not really the whole story.

Youths in the same north that were used to pelt Jonathan with stones, burn his campaign vehicles in the north, are here with a peace offering:

Without consulting with Jonathan, they contributed the sum of 100 million naira to purchase an All Progressive Congress, APC presidential nomination form for him to run for election and if he wins, to spend only four years, maximum. Then hand over to the north that is uncomfortable without the levers of power.

Consider this statement released from Jonathan’s media Office.

It has come to our notice that a group has purportedly purchased Presidential Nomination and Expression of Interest forms, of the All Progressives Congress APC, in the name of former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

We wish to categorically state that Dr. Jonathan was not aware of this bid and did not authorize it.

We want to state that if the former President wanted to contest an election, he would make his intentions clear to the public and will not enter through the back door.

While we appreciate the overwhelming request by a cross-section of Nigerians, for Dr. Jonathan to make himself available for the 2023 Presidential election, we wish to state that he has not in any way, committed himself to this request.

Buying a presidential aspiration form in the name Dr. Jonathan without his consent, knowing the position he had held in this country, is considered an insult to his person. The general public is therefore advised to disregard it.
