Yet again, President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointment of Mr Abbas Umar Masanawa, from his home state of Katsina as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company has received sharp criticisms from a broad spectrum of Nigerians who wonder why almost all key appointments always head north. Many analysts believe that both the president and Mr. Abbas Masanawa are related.
Abbas Umar Masanawa’s appointment is among the recent appointments made by Nigeria’s president Muhammadu
Buhari into sensitive and key positions including picking Mr. Yusuf Magaji Bichi from neighboring Kano State to head the Directorate of State Security ahead of crucial presidential and other elections that will come up in the first quarter of 2019. HSBC confidential report present Mr. Buhari as a candidate who would likely lose the election.
His kinsman Abbas Masanawa will be in charge of the printing of ballot papers and sensitive election materials for next year’s crucial polls.
One thing though, is Masanawa’s cognate experience. He was a top Deputy Executive Director at one of the most profitable new generation banks in the country, Zenith bank while the current Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Emefiele was there as Managing Director. He took Masanawa along with him to the Central Bank and appointed him the Finance and Administration Director of the printing and minting company that is a subsidiary of the CBN.
