Despite Nigeria’s Enormous Gas Reserves Of 206.53Tr Cu. Ft, The Home Of Natural Gas Remains In Pitch Darkness

This is Refinery Road in Warri, Delta State where endless lines of petrol tankers abound, hoping to get a supply of PMS. The city faces acute electricity challenges.

With 206.53 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, Nigeria has the largest deposits in the African Continent. Much of the reserves, perhaps over 85%, are in the Niger Delta region.

Yet, governance incompetence with sheer cluelessness has not enabled it to utilize this natural endowment to benefit the people or the state governments’ coffers, and this is astonishingly mind boggling.

Take Delta State for instance, ordinary citizens in Isoko land, Ndokwa land, Urhobo land, Ijaw, and Itsekiri and other areas have been campaigning on Facebook and Twitter begging the governor Okowa administration to build gas turbines and give the people electricity.

He has ignored everyone for 7½ years now. Yet he wants the people’s votes in order to become Nigeria’s vice president should Atiku Abubakar make it in the ballot.

What excuse has Okowa to give now, to Deltans before February this year when votes shall count ?

Fortunately for the people of Delta, they have seen the clear difference in the superlative performance of Godwin Obaseki in neighbouring Edo State. So Okowa would not say there was no mentor to emulate.

L-R: Edo State governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; his Ekiti State counterpart, Kayode Fayemi, and Delta State Governor and vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, at the funeral of late Princess Margaret Onyemakonor Obaigbena, the mother of Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Thisday/Arise Group, in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State on Saturday, August 20, 2022.

Obaseki has been governor for only 6 years out of 8. Okowa has been governor for more than 7½ years out of 8. Infact, he has four months left to conclude his tenure and go into history as former governor .

Obaseki (right)at work, lighting up Edo State with his few years old Ossiomo Power Plant. Delta has more abundant gas and more money, yet darkness remains deep and distressing.

Obaseki keeps extending state owned built and installed electricity from district to district almost every month and Edo State is being fully lit up. This depresses Deltans in their darkness the more.

Light up! Edo hails Obaseki continually for making the people’s money work for them.

Joy of light in Edo State under Obaseki.

Who wants to rely on the Federal Government owned power behemoth, PHCN that has shown gross lack of intelligence for over sixty years ?

All that citizens in Delta keep hearing about is the acts of loan addiction, even a few months to the end of his tenure as governor.

It is not that he has constructed Fly-overs to break traffic gridlock everywhere like it is in Delta’s neighboring State, Rivers State.

So where are his own defining areas of superlative performances ?

Look, Wike is known for bridging swamps by Fly-overs. Obaseki is notable in constructing a refinery, building Electric Power projects etc.

What about Okowa ?

This is why people from all over Delta State are clamoring for Peter Obi. And the stage is well set for an outstanding vote to Labour Party in the state. Even though their own governor wants to be vice to Atiku.

Crossing the Niger Bridge from Asaba, Delta State to Onitsha in Anambra State. Peter Obi has a home in Onitsha.

Unfortunately for the PDP in Delta State, the lackluster performance of Okowa would impact negatively on the gubernatorial candidate in the state. He it was, that kept on approving the big ticket unbridled loans for the governor in his position as Speaker of the House of Assembly in Asaba.

Ken Pela / Julie Nwabogo Umukoro Labour Party ticket is raising a euphoria in Delta State. First time that a female is on the governorship ticket in Delta State and there’s hope of a better 2023-2027.

And the gubernatorial ticket seems to be a reward. Thus, voters would cast their votes for Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate as a protest against the PDP that has ruled the state since 1999. Consider all the money that accrued to them, against the backdrop of what’s on ground. The deficit in financial application is mind boggling.
