It was a special day for a friend of presidential spokesman to Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr. Femi Adesina. He therefore reached out on Facebook thus:

“Judex, long time o. Many happy returns. Greet madam.”

That was all that it took, and even before the recipient of the post could see or respond to the shout out from his friend, perhaps long before he assumed office, the staccato of replies rent the post.

“Femi Adesina Sir, I dropped u some messages to ur inbox here”, came one respondent.

Another person could not resist the temptation of a public officer found in the ring, sending birthday wishes to his friend. This reply was caustic, aimed to depress Femi Adesina’s good intention.

“The mouthpiece of the worst government in the world! Ekuse”.

The recipient of the birthday felicitation, Judex Omaka Okoro, finally woke up to his own message and responded to Femi Adesina: “SSA tnx greatly. Not been easy with Madam and I”.

What a time and place to express condition. Like a too good an opportunity one must not miss to conditions.

Here’s another comment from Nuhu Olobo: “Femi Adesina, don you must wish me at least to break the record of presidential spokesman wish me on my birthday. Abeg greet baba for me” .

“Femi Adesina, Sir u must talk to me oo
I want to have a chat with a Presidential Adviser too”.

“Judex Omaka Okoro, tell ur friend Femi, there was a country…”

From the above banters, it’s obvious the way people roll, whenever a top official of state comes down from his exalted office to do what regular people take for granted on a regular basis. This is the burden of public office.

Perhaps officials should stay aloof from the public to avoid attracting both positive and negative comments, some caustic, others warm ?

That may not be an option for after office, private life as an ordinary citizen beckons and no one wants to be accused of neglecting his crowd while in office.

So ?
Take all in your stride and smile through it all with courage, humanity and dignity.

The burden of office is not an easy one. No tea party at all.
