Alhaji Maitama Sule, the Danmasannin Kano has passed on.
He died in a Cairo hospital.
All. Sule was a First Republic Minister and one time Nigerian Ambassador to the United Nations and a member of the Northern Elders Forum.
As a young Minister of Petroleum in the late 50s and early 60s, he encouraged AGIP Oil of Italy to come into Nigeria and compete with Shell d’Arcy by bidding higher for an Oil prospecting licence, thereby breaking the monopoly of the Anglo Dutch company, Shell.
He was in his 80s.
His death brought about a sombre look in the ancient city of Kano as the Hausa community seem to have lost an important voice and a repertoire of history.
