Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Immediate former governor of Rivers, who is presently the FCT minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike has been engaged in a protracted fight with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara over the control of the political structure in Rivers.

The showdown has lingered for so long and in keeping with the ruling of the Supreme Court for local government autonomy and elections into the councils, elections are being held currently.

It seems that there have been subterranean efforts to scuttle the process through the procurement of court judgements using the instrumentality of the police and the matter has gotten to a head.
Should the elections lead to a clear victory for the new party floated by the governor, the influence of Mr. Wike may decline and it seems that that is what he fears. And Fubara may truly become the new sheriff in town.

Siminalayi Fubara addressed the “Gentlemen of the Press, we came here this morning when we heard that the Nigerian police are coming to take over”, he started when security reports informed him that the police were in the premises of the Rivers State Electoral Commission.

“ One DC of police sent some policemen to the premises of Rivers State Election Commission to take over”, he said angrily during the press conference .

We’ve taken enough of this nonsense”.

“Did the ruling specify that the election should not be held?”

If the police fail to show up, “we can provide our own security”.

“This election must be held and results will be declared and winners will be sworn in. Enough is enough”, he further added, showing defiance
.

As soon as the governor, after ensuring that the commission’s office was secure, left behind his chief of staff, the speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, and some state and National Assembly members, among others, to man the facility.

There has been tension in Rivers lately, following the opposition by Nyesom Wike and his loyalists to the local elections which could alter the political structure in the state in favour of the governor.

Interesting times indeed, in Rivers State.
