Ibadan And It’s Filled Fishy Christmas. Chicken Costs Send A Valiant Citizenry To Cold Rooms For Frozen Fish
The Oasis Reporters
December 25, 2024

With long and seriously drawn frowning faces, the commonest arguments you discern on the face of Ibadan elite is one question looking for answers:
Where is it written that Christmas must be celebrated as you chew chicken?
But if you’ve known those valiant citizens of Ibadan who celebrate and adore their cuisines, you’d easily know that something is definitely missing from their heated arguments this time around.
Time to celebrate has now turned to time to ruminate over the economic circumstances of a nation and it’s cost of living crisis that has shot the cost of a full grown chicken to 30,000 naira and more.
A Poultry merchant told our reporter in Ibadan that prices have to escalate because the cost of feed inputs from groundnut cake to maize have all risen to astronomical levels. “We have no choice but to increase the cost of chicken so as to remain standing on just one leg”, the poultry attendant said.
Many residents flocked to Zartech Chicken’s shop, the largest poultry chicken company owned by Lebanese merchants who have been living in Ibadan for close to a century now. Before the office at Mobil area opened for business a day before Christmas, shoppers on the queue had risen above 1000, by 7:00 am. “Each buyer would have a pack for 4000 naira only and you can’t have more than 3packs per shopper”, came the announcement.
Very many shoppers flocked to frozen fish cold rooms and depots to have something extra for Christmas 2024.
But no one is happy over the cost of living crisis Nigeria is currently witnessing.
