An audio recording in circulation on social media said to have emanated from the Abuja residence of the incumbent Senator representing Edo North, Senator Francis Alimikhena allegedly recorded on Thursday 28th April, 2022 at about 8pm in the late evening till about 10pm, shows that the rumoured intention of former Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomole to bounce back into political reckoning by going to the Senate may be hitting a brick wall after all.

A source who was privy to the meeting, said the meeting was to request for Senator Francis Alimikhena to step down from the Senatorial race ahead of the All Progressive Congress (APC) party’s primary election.

Despite the generally low recording quality of the audio, Alimikhena could be clearly heard insisting that he was not going to step down for anybody and urged each participant to go with their supporters to the primaries.

Speaking on the phone from Auchi in the region, Omogbai Umoru, a political affairs analyst said that the image of Alimikhena in the Senatorial district are “towering, overwhelming and acceptable”. Adding further, he said asking the incumbent Senator to step down to satisfy the craving of the ex-governor may cause severe repercussions for the party in the region.
The people would react and make it a clean sweep for the PDP in Edo State.”

“People are still angry with Oshiomole over his ill thought out push of Obaseki out of the party, leading to the easy harvest of the PDP and unmitigated loss for the APC”.

First meeting of Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki (left) after Oshiomole’s ill adviced push, Obaseki’s forced departure from the APC into the PDP and his resounding win back to office for his final term.

A source close to the Senator revealed that the raised voice at the meeting was
as a result of the “death wishes” statement allegedly uttered by someone on Oshiomole’s entourage who said that he (Senator Francis Alimikhena) “should be happy that he did not die in office as a Senator”. Such a provocative utterance got the Senator angry and he respectfully asked both Oshiomhole and his team to walk out of his residence.

“The people of Edo North had earlier crusaded against Oshiomhole’s senatorial ambition through various publications and insisted on Senator Francis Alimikhena due to his penetrating insights into the nature of politics, added to his capacity to win an election”, Omogbai Umoru further analyzed for The Oasis Reporters.

“Oshiomhole is a polarizing figure in Nigeria and Edo Politics and if care is not taken ahead of 2023, Oshiomhole will tear APC apart and destroy the party in the State”

He equally maintained that the former APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has “cast out ethics in his pursuit of political power. Oshiomhole ought to understand that his glory days in Edo State are over and he must immediately shun himself to a great extent of personal political interest which has made APC an opposition party in Edo State.

“Neither Oshiomhole nor his cohorts can play God in the affairs of men. No political associate or group can crown Oshiomhole as the CEO of Edo North Politics. The rejection of Oshiomhole by the people of Edo State as demonstrated in the last election is still making the people unhappy”.

However, Francis Alimikhena has served for two tenures and he is going in for the third one.
