Is Trump Thawing? Seeks A Negotiated Settlement With Mexico As He Suspends Tariff Implementation For One Month

Trump suspends Tariffs implementation against Mexico for one month.. to negotiate deal with President Claudia Sheinbaum

Ever since Donald Trump’s win at the US presidential election, his policy directions seem directed at illegal immigrants and the smuggling of Fentanyl into the US, as he outlined how he intended to deal with those issues in the immediate neighborhood against Canada and Mexico as well as other countries with punishing tariffs.

Almost immediately, Canada retaliated with its own tariffs in equal measures. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada equally spoke directly to the American people with the past history of cooperation that seemed imperilled.

Mario Nawfal @MarioNawfal then posted news that was breaking on Twitter:

ONTARIO CANCELS $100M STARLINK DEAL AS TRUMP’S 25% TARIFFS LOOM

Premier Doug Ford announced Ontario is scrapping its $100 million contract with Starlink ahead of Trump’s incoming tariffs on US goods. Ford’s government is also banning other American companies from provincial contracts in response to the trade measures.

Starlink owner, billionaire Elon Musk is one of Trump’s biggest supporters, and incidentally, partly Canadian and partly South African.

A commentator added that Canadians “in the middle of the country, not in Toronto or Montreal are based. They all have chickens, and land and know how to use their hands to do stuff. They’re friendly, and very chill”.

Talk about speaking to resilience in the face of intimidation which is in the throwback towards resistance and fight back.

Before Mexico could roll out it’s own pushback, suddenly Donald Trump announces that he had just spoken to the Mexican President Claudia Shenbaum who has promised to send 10,000 soldiers to the Mexico-American border to checkmate the crossing of illegal immigrants to the USA and the smuggling of Fentanyl into the country.

The newly announced 25% tariffs on Mexican products imported into the US would have a one month delay before implementation, to give room for a negotiated settlement.

Real diplomatic foxtrot at work.

Maybe as the negotiations commence, some status quo ante would be reached. After all, the US needs the kind of labour that American citizens may not want to do because they are almost menial.

But the immigrants that perform them need the little income they earn which they often send back home to help their families in the devastated economies of the global south.

May there be goodwill and understanding in all the negotiations.
