Oba Rashidi Ladoja (left), removed Rivers State governor, Similayi Fubara.

When Nigerian political historians examine the current happenings in the saga of the deposition of Governor Sim Fubara of Oil rich Rivers State and the swearing in of a military sole administrator, they may cast glances to what had previously happened in Oyo State.

Currently an Oba, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja who was born on September 25, 1944), a Nigerian businessman and politician served as the governor of Oyo State from May 29, 2003 to January 12, 2006.

.,

He ran into stormy waters with his political godfather, Chief Lamidi Adedibu when a demand was made of the governor to allegedly surrender a portion of the resources that the governor needed to run the state with.

Ladoja was said to have refused.

Adedibu was upset and Oyo State faced a crisis. It ended with the impeachment of the governor. Not for lack of developing the state, but for clashing with his godfather and benefactor.

He was impeached in January 2006.

After Ladoja’s impeachment, his deputy, Christopher Alao Akala was sworn in.

But Ladoja went to Court.

While he was in court battling his case, political primaries had been held. This meant that even if he won his case and returned to office, he could not run again as governor for a second term.

And indeed, he won the case as the courts declared that his impeachment was illegal, thus he returned to office and then governor Christopher Alao Akala reverted to his former office as deputy governor.

Governor Ladoja was reinstated in December 2006 and he completed his
from 2006 to 2007.

While he was out of office, he lost his People’s Democratic Party (PDP) pedestal to run again for office. That position went to his deputy, Christopher Alao Akala. The ultimate winner was the godfather, Chief Lamidi Adedibu.

As regards the current crisis happening in Rivers State between the state governor, Sim Fubara and the former governor turned godfather who is also the Minister of the Federal Capital Authority, Nyesom Wike, there’s an anonymous take online that reads thus:

Former governor of Rivers State and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

Sim will take a break
– Ibas will hold forth for a while.

– Ibas will commit his own
– Ibas will conduct Local Government elections.

– Wike’s men will win LG elections
– Sim will not be impeached but will return a weakened man.

– Wike will remain on top
– Sim will complete his term but will not be re-elected
– Wike will produce another Ijaw Governor in 2027

Don’t you get it ? It’s all just politics!

It may sound funny. But it lends credence to the permutations ahead of the elections in 2027.
These are all dress rehearsals for the battle ahead. And political godfathers are flexing.
