“The coalition has gathered information from online news organizations suggesting that President Asiwaju Tinubu Ahmed is engaging in discussions with Siminalayi Fubara and the former Governor, now the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) appears to lack the necessary capacity, good intent, and commitment to safeguard the strength and integrity of the opposition.

Regrettably, the PDP National Leadership seems complacent, allowing the ruling party to intervene in and resolve its internal crises is compromising the opposition’s efficacy.

A robust opposition should speak authoritatively, hold the government accountable, and possess the ability to discipline members undermining the party’s reputation and sanctity.

The reported meeting, is said to have in attendance the Vice president, APC stewards and other stakeholders from Rivers State, there should be a clear demarcation between the roles of opposition and ruling parties.

Furthermore, the pervasive issue of defections has significantly weakened opposition parties across Nigeria. The reported collaborative effort to facilitate the return of defectors, if accurate, contravenes established laws. It is essential to reiterate that such actions run counter to our legal framework, as seats declared vacant due to defections cannot be automatically reinstated without due process.

Edison Ehie, in his capacity as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, has taken decisive and constitutional steps by declaring the seats vacant, acting within the confines of the law. A crucial aspect is the existing court order that upholds Edison Ehie as the Speaker, and until such a decision is appealed, the status quo dictates that the seats are indeed vacant.

In light of these developments, the responsibility now falls on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election. This process will ensure the restoration of a constitutional system and already functioning Executive government in Rivers State. Aspiring Individuals from various political parties, including Labour Party, PDP, APC, NNPP, and others, should promptly file their nominations, facilitating the commencement of a new electoral process. This approach adheres to legal principles and contributes to the stability and legitimacy of the political landscape in Rivers State and Nigeria at large”.
