When Ase born Joy Ukperi in Ndokwa East was told by her newly wedded husband that they’d be moving to the UK for a new life abroad, she didn’t know what to expect. Armed with her school certificate, she saw her first task, like everyone else in her little fishing community on the banks of River Ase which flows into the majestic River Niger, as playing her role first, as a dutiful housewife and mother.
A few decades later in the United Kingdom, Joy hit on an inspiration.
To head back to school.
“I went to Coventry University. Juggling work, home front and caring for a child with special needs whilst being the vice president of Ndokwa Union, UK Chapter amongst other groups…… It wasn’t an easy journey. I enjoyed every bit of it”, she spoke to The Oasis Reporters on the line from Midlands.
“I was motivated as well as determined”, she further added.

Coventry University is in the top 5 for best UK cities according to the QS Top Universities guide 2022.
But why did she choose Law as a course of study ?
“I decided to study law because a law degree opens a wider door in the employment market, it equips you for almost any profession that requires intellectual strength combined with practical approach to the world at large”.
When she was called to the dais as a first class graduate, Joy’s joy knew no bounds, more so as she had to speak in the tradition of Valedictorians.
“Be inspired, push yourself out of lethargy and learn more at whatever age and under whatever circumstances”, the beautiful fifty-five year old grandmother sent out to her sisters and friends in Delta State of Nigeria.
