Osun Guber: 48 Political Parties To Slug It Out As INEC Releases Final List Of Candidates

Osun gubernatorial election frontrunners: PDP’s Adeleke (top left); Oyetola of the APC (top right) and Omisore (bottom left), battling for the soul of Osun State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oshogbo, the Osun State capital has published the names of forty eight political parties that are contesting in the forthcoming gubernatorial election with the names of their governorship candidates and the deputies.

Speaking at the presentation of soft copies of voters’ register to the participating political parties, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Segun Agbaje, said that the exercise was in line with the electoral act of the country and the law of the Commission.
The strategic meeting also had Chief Adedeji Shoyebi, INEC National Commissioner in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ekiti in attendance.

According to Segun Agbaje the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, a total of 1,152,751 PVCs have been collected by their owners out of 1,668,524 received in the state, leaving a balance of 515,773 as at August 17.
He said that it was sad that over 500,000 PVCs had yet to be collected out of the over 1.6 million produced for registered voters in the state.

A cursory analysis of the candidates and the political terrain would likely show the big odds to favour the PDP governorship candidate, Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, the APC candidate, Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola and the SDP candidate, Iyiola Omisore who was on the PDP ticket in 2014, having previously served the state as deputy governor.
PANDEL party is drawing attention and bemused interest as the all female candidacy team with Adebayo Rasheedat as it’s governorship candidate and
Ajibola Fatimat as the running mate.
RP as a party has nominated
Ayodele Mercy Tosin as governorship candidate. That’s most likely a feminine name with a male as her running mate Adejumo Mukaila, in a region that celebrates patriarchal dominance.
A few of the parties too, tried their hands with gender balance.

Almost all the parties semed careful to effect religious balancing in the choice of candidates, a new low for a region that hitherto celebrated their yorubaness first, while making their religious diversity, take second place.
This development, analysts say, started with current governor Aregbesola who tried very hard to rebrand Osun State with Islamic colours as a possible way of pleasing his northern Muslim compatriots. Hitherto, nobody cared about religion in the State of The Living Spring.
Moreover, residents of the state say Aregbesola served with a monumental absence of distinction. Wages of workers are usually owed in several months arrears with virtually no development in the state and the state languishing under the yoke of a huge debt burden.

Many new voter’s are intent on punishing Aregbesola’s protégé and choice candidate, the APC candidate,Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola. Incidentally, he has been Aregbesola’s Chief of staff for over seven years now, from the first tenure till present time, overseeing the lack of development and progress in the state.
