Labour Party pledges to take Delta state out of Debt and reposition it. ‘Gbese’ is street slang for debt.

Going by the humongous amounts of money that flows into the Delta State treasurer every month from the 13% derivation allocation as an oil producing state, internally generated revenues (IGR), other special purpose incomes, “Delta state ought to be like Dubai by now”, states elder Statesman, Chris Biose who was a Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) stalwart and an Obafemi Awolowo ally in the 70s and 80s in old Midwest Region, now Edo and Delta States has stated.

Elder Statesman Chris Biose speaks (watch video)

Delta state has one of the best highly educated and well trained workforce in the country. Many of them do not stay in their homeland because of Delta state government’s scorched earth policy with kleptomania and binge borrowing as the only party in power since 1999 in this third republic.

How can a state have so much, yet mismanage what they receive and still go on binge borrowing to bankrupt their own state, then impose their binge borrowing with nothing to show accomplices as candidates to succeed them?

The problem with Delta state is simply and squarely that of leadership.

The reality is that they know exactly what they are doing.

Unexpectedly, the entry of Labour Party into the political fray has shocked them to the marrow.

Hence Okowa’s daughter was said to have visited Labour Party members in a meeting who are called Obi-dients and openly confessed that “people are angry”. Then she brazenly pleaded with them to please still vote in the PDP, whose gubernatorial candidate, is the State House of Assembly speaker, Sheriff Oborevwori, the chief enabler of her father’s binge borrowing that is crippling Delta.

The video is out in the public domain.

While the Federal Government was gratuitously releasing the funds due to the Niger Delta States, and the governor of neighboring Rivers State, Bar. Nyesom Wike was using his State’s own share of the financial largesse to construct flyover bridges and more access roads all over Rivers State, Okowa’s government kept sealed lips on the development, and still got approvals from his partner in the State House of Assembly to approve more loans. Yet, there’s nothing on ground to justify the funds received and where it went into.

Governor Wike has constructed seven flyovers and much more infrastructure. Delta just did one recently at Asaba.

At the same time, the governor of another neighbouring state, Godwin Obaseki in Edo State was busy constructing an oil refinery, electrifying his state with Edo state Electricity outfit giving his people electric power 24/7 to increase economic productivity of his people and increasing agricultural output, Okowa was busy channeling money to fund the political jamboree of Adamawa State born Atiku Abubakar who clouds himself with a messianic complex to rule Nigeria, thereby extending Fulani rule over Nigeria for another eight years with Okowa as the Vice President. The project failed with a thud because of it’s internal hubris and the anger of the good people of Nigeria.

So why would the angry people of Delta state not move to end the 24 year reign of financial terrorism by the PDP in the State?

Delta state has more abundant gas reserves than Edo state. Yet the administration did not tap into it to light up Delta state and take it out of gross darkness. Then why should they be allowed to perpetuate themselves in power?

Long before Labour Party came on the scene, the loan loving All Peoples Congress ( APC) had been presenting itself as an alternative. Yet their records at the federal level have been woeful. The deputy Senate president, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has been a close ally of President Muhammadu Buhari. The legislature has been a major accomplice in returning Nigeria into deep debts that the government of Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2007) freed Nigeria from before 2007.

Now, Nigeria is back to unmitigated debt, worse than it was before 1999. As a deputy Senate president, he has been in the leadership of the legislature that kept on approving these loans with no change in Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit. For instance, electricity supply, which was one of the key issues President Muhammadu Buhari promised to tackle when he was campaigning for office about eight years ago, is now worse than it was before they came into power.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege is running on the ticket of the APC in Delta state, but he was a top stalwart in the discredited PDP administration. He merely switched parties for opportunistic purposes.

There’s a viral video currently in circulation allegedly warning citizens of Orogun, Ovie Omo-Agege’s home village, of dire consequences if they fail to vote for him. The message in Urhobo language threatened the people with death if they fail to vote for the APC. According to the video, State police would do a forensic check on all ballot papers and possibly deal with those that voted against the APC.

It is not yet known if the video is an authentic one and was actually recorded in Orogun because of the influence of electronic make-believe videos these days, it should be incumbent on the APC in Delta State to debunk the video and assure Deltans of the right to vote for their choice candidates freely and fairly.

(We have seen the video but would not be airing it as there is yet no proof that Ovie Omo-Agege authorized or endorsed it).

As a result of the records of the old discredited parties, it is incumbent on Deltans to make a fresh start. And as elder Statesman Chris Biose said, vote for Labour Party at the gubernatorial and state Assembly elections.

Labour Party in Delta state is most likely to model itself on the achievements of it’s national icon, Peter Obi when he was governor of Anambra State to take his state out of debt and secure it for economic development.

All that it would take is a disciplined approach to financial management, infused with good governance.

The records in office of PDP’s Sheriff Oborevwori as a gross loan approving enabler throughout his tenure as Speaker of Delta state House of Assembly and Ovie Omo-Agege as Deputy Senate President at the federal level in terms of loan enablement is not cheery. Nigeria is now back into a loan crisis like never before and with nothing to show for it.
