Plateau Corpers Instructed To Stay Away From Work, Remain Indoors As Shootings Continue

National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members on one year compulsory primary assignment in Plateau State were surprised to receive electronic messages from their supervisors not to go to work but remain Indoors owing to fatal security challenges ongoing in some parts of Plateau State in North Central Nigeria.

Their parents have been making a flurry of telephone calls to Jos and other places asking about safety arrangements in the state, constantly under attack from Fulani herdsmen militia who want to drive out or kill the indigenous inhabitants for their land that the Fulanis want for nomadic Cattle grazing.

Meanwhile, proactive States like Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States in the north east ravaged by Boko Haram Insurgents, have wisely posted all the Youth corpers sent to their camps back to other safe States, while North central States like Plateau, Benue and Nassarawa States constantly under siege from Fulani herdsmen militia have retained the corpers sent to them in the hope that the security situation would get better.

Unlike Oyo and many other states, most establishments in Plateau State neither offer accommodation nor pay any stipend to serving corpers who are left to fend for themselves in an environment they’ve probably never been to before in their lives.

A sample of the messages received is here:

“This is to inform all Jos South CM that due to the contemporary security challenges at Barkin ladi, Mararaba jama’a and some parts of Jos South LGA, please note that everybody should remain indoors till further notice. Thank you.
