The Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Area, Hon. (Princess) Benedicta Attoh has frowned against all forms of violence against the masculine and feminine gender, saying there must be no sacred cows in the application of laws against gender based violence.

Hon. (Princess) Attoh who quoted the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act says the law recognizes that both men and women can be raped, violated or abused. Apart from vaginal penetration, rape also includes unlawful anal and oral sex which she said are beyond sexual assault as established in the VAPP law.

The Council Chairman who was speaking at the Council Conference Hall in Agenebode during an advocacy/sensitization exercise on the provision of the VAPP law across Edo State organised by the State Ministry of Social Development and gender issues in collaboration with the local government narrated her efforts in getting justice for a young lady that was once tortured by a group of men who inserted pepper into her private part. She explained that she contacted relevant NGOs and law enforcement agents who arrested the culprits and prosecuted them.

While calling on mothers to protect their children against all forms of molestation, she further appealed to parents not to hide evidence by promptly reporting any issue of rape immediately to her or to the nearest primary health care center to establish evidence for appropriate application of the provision of the law.

She expressed gratitude to the wife of the Governor of Edo State, Her Excellency, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki for personally spearheading the crusade against child molestation. She described the VAPP law as timely and helpful in the elimination of violence in private and public life, prohibiting all forms of violence against persons to provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment of offenders.
