In a press release issued by Muhammad Bello, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on February 1, 2022 titled

Lamido: Nigeria Needs A Nationalistic Leader Like Tambuwal Not A ‘Zonal’ One

reads that former Jigawa state Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido “has appealed to political stakeholders across the country to avoid the issue of zoning as a criterion for leadership selection in 2023”.

But just take a keener look at the gender, caliber, religious and political hue of Tambuwal’s core team. He’s surrounded by people of his zone only. Same culture, same religion, same gender, same tribe etc, yet he is gunning for the presidency of the country even at a time that Nigerians are fatigued over leadership by one tribe, principally surrounded by cronies from that same ethnic group that have not yet delivered on the basic metrics of a cohesive and secure Nigeria for the benefit of all Nigerians.

Sule Lamido, Muslim northerner was made Nigeria’s foreign minister by a detribalised Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Christian southerner, yet he “opined that Nigerians with proven track record of trustworthiness who also have national outlook like Gov. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state should be encouraged to pick up the challenge of running for the position of President of the country”.

National outlook“?

Yet look at those in his core team: They are virtually all Fulani leaders, Muslims, male, ex power holders etc.

Lamido made the call on Tuesday when he received Gov. Tambuwal and his entourage, who visited him in his Bamaina country home in Birnin Kudu local government area of Jigawa state in the Governor’s first leg of nationwide consultations on whether or not he should seek to run for the position of President under the PDP.

The PDP chieftain, who was also one time minister of foreign affairs, expressed concern that all previous efforts made to stabilize the country has been bastardized in recent times by the worrisome upsurge of ethnicity and religious schisms.

But Lamido could have looked beyond his “far sight” and seen the “ethnicity and religious schisms” in his august visitors certainly.

According to Sule Lamido, “these trends needs to be reversed, pointing out that what is needed is competent leaders with sterling qualities such as Tambuwal”.

The former governor and former foreign affairs minister should have spent more energy telling the nation about Tambuwal’s “competence and sterling qualities” by enumerating them.

What has Tambuwal’s competence done to reduce the incidences of millions of out of school Hausa children that roam Sokoto State streets begging for food from morning till night ?

Has his tenure dented slightly the scourge of banditry and kidnappings in his state ?

What about the dismal level of the girl child illiteracy, early marriages that result in VVF health challenges in his state ?
Nigerian rich and political class cadre often fly to savour the sights of the UAE, do they not see the class of Muslim females there ?
Quo vadis, North ?

“Our son here is like me. We have similar and parallel positions in government. I have even held more sensitive positions than him,” he said jocularly, emphasizing that he is “looking forward to having” the Governor as a worthy successor, who is eminently qualified to run for the highest office in the land should he choose to do so.”

He added that he is ready to support Gov. Tambuwal if he opts to seek PDP’s ticket to be its flag bearer provided he will be a “pan Nigerian that will be just.”

“We can reach out to all Nigerians across the geographic and other divides in our bid to support him.

The only divide in Nigeria is the political fat cats who do not to improve the conditions that they met versus the hapless citizenry who continue to endure the incompetencies of leadership croynism and mediocrity that has held Nigeria bound and underdeveloped, thus making the nation an object of scorn in the comity of nations.

“This does not suggest that we are beggars hungry for power. Instead, we are worthy stakeholders with friends in many parts of the country who we can persuade to see reason with us in the realization of the Nigerian Project,” Lamido stated.

In his remarks, former Governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, who expressed gratitude to Lamido for the warm reception accorded them, said the visit was not political but consultative.

“You are not just a former Governor but a great political mobilizer whose people still respect and follow despite the fact that you have been out of office for almost seven years now.

See the heavyweight names that accompanied Gov. Tambuwal during the visit to Dutse: the Deputy Governor of Zamfara state, Barrister Mahdi Aliyu Gusau, former Deputy Governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Mukhtar Shagari, former minister for power, Engr Bello Suleiman and former chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bello Muhammad.

Others in Gov. Tambuwal’s entourage included former Director Counterterrorism in the office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Gen Sarkin-Yaki Bello and Hon. Aminu Musa Koko.

The August visitors, led by Mustapha Sule Lamido, son of their host, were welcomed at Dutse International Airport by a large and joyous crowd that rode and drove with the Governor’s motorcade at snail speed for about two hours in a journey that less than thirty minutes to Bamaina, Lamido’s town”.
