Oyo state governor Seyi Makinde walks in front ahead of Rwandan president, Paul Kagame as the go into the Retreat venue.

Rwandan president, Paul Kagame who is an acclaimed global expert at turning dismal circumstances into bright hopes on the horizon has invited Nigerian governors to his country’s capital city, Kigali, for pep talk and some mentoring while he takes them through the paces of growth and development.

It was an NGF/UNDP affair, but at the invitation of Paul Kagame.

Let’s hear it all for Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State who is an engineer, and Vice Chairman of the state governors forum in Nigeria.

“We were in Kigali for the Executive Leadership Retreat organized by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the United Nations Development Programme for Governors on the invitation of His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda.

“The three-day retreat which was held on 24-26 August, 2023 was themed ‘Reimagining Leadership in a Fast-Changing World’.

Our discussions at the retreat equipped us with adaptive leadership strategies and identifying pathways to effective governance and nationwide sustainable development.

In my capacity as the Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), I signed the memorandum of understanding between the NGF and the United Nations Development Programme to institutionalize the retreat which will now hold regularly and explore other thematic areas”.

Thanks to Paul Kagame for this, because the condition in Nigeria can try a man’s spirit.

The country has vast land and the largest population in Africa. But children in the country, especially in some parts of the north, go to bed on the streets, and also on empty stomachs. That is, if they are unable to beg enough for the day.

Many educated youths from the south can’t find work, so they migrate abroad.

Nigeria is Africa’s leading crude oil producer with more gas reserves as well, yet for sixty years, it has been struggling to produce less than 5,000MW of electricity for a population of over 200 million people. Lifting its game above that is daunting for the power sector.
New York city alone has more electric power than Nigeria.

South Africa produces electricity that hovers around 50,000 MW ( ten times more than Nigeria’s production) yet it’s population is believed to be less than 45 million.

The situation was dismal also in Egypt. But with purposeful leadership, they turned its electricity circumstances around, and now have virtually no power cuts anymore. Egypt has been invited to join the esteemed group of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) nations.

It is believed that Paul Kagame would have shown the Nigerian governors the sights and sounds of the clean city of Kigali, and probably told them the story of the country. How it transited from hate and genocide to an amazing nation of hope and progress.

While driving round the city, the governors must have noticed the presence of Nigerian banks by the well paved, well swept streets of Kigali as well.

Welcome back, govs.
