Rethinking Delta Floods

What am I really seeing?
Once again, the floods are upon the Niger Delta communities and this is nearing the time when projects would be suspended and the people lie helplessly, praying for the dry season to quickly come.
Year after year, life occupations would be disrupted and many more Niger deltans would be evacuated while some people would travel to dryer areas because they have relations over there, bearing the indignities of squatting because they’ve abandoned their spatial mansions for the floods to occupy.
Deltans, isn’t it about time for us to have a workable masterplan to make homeland livable all year round, either on land and on water in fun, dignity and fulfilment?
Living one year after another one the same way without shifting our thinking to change things, yet expect miracles from others?
Think of it: Countries like the Netherlands and a few others have so much water, flooding and all, how have they turned all that into paradises that we all crave for and escape to for holidays?
Why can’t we understudy their masterplan, seek their technical expertise and turn our land into living places all year round?
The time is now. There’s no better time and no time to waste.

It is time to reclaim our environment and take it to higher heights. Stop the land grabbers building on flood plains and insist on flood channelization and unblocking drainages while we insist on no more indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
It’s our own environment. Let’s save it. Enhance it. Live in it and prosper in it. I love my land, I won’t lie.
