For decades, so much has been talked about the 2nd Niger Bridge and fears had been expressed if it would ever be done or not.
Most especially, how?
The pulse quickened five days or thereabouts to the end of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure as president. And from his successor, Alhaji Umaru Yar’adua to Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Nigeria saw the initial works and continuation under Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Finally, it is done. Just a few days to Christmas 2024, the bridge is ready.
Here are screenshots of the bridge.
The main artery connecting Nigeria’s South East to the rest of the country has finally been served by Julius Berger Plc, reputed as great bridge builders from Germany to Nigeria with so much love.
Here’s the explainer literature from Julius Berger Plc:
As the festive season draws near, many Nigerians journey eastward, returning to loved ones and family traditions. This annual migration underscores the vital importance of seamless connections, not just between people, but also between the regions that sustain our nation’s growth.
The Second River Niger Bridge, constructed by Julius Berger, stands as a monumental achievement in infrastructure development. Positioned alongside the historic bridge of 1965, this 1,600 m engineering marvel is more than a road, it’s a lifeline. At Julius Berger, we are proud to have contributed to a project that not only supports Nigeria’s economy but also reinforces the bonds that unite us as a people.
This holiday season, as many cross the Niger River to reunite with loved ones, we are reminded of the power of connections—bridging distances and strengthening our shared journey forward.
