Unfazed and undaunted, the courageous Kogi Central Senator, Mrs Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan raised her petition to be placed on the table of acceptance.
The eyes of the storm world wide from all over Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the rest of the world were watching when Senate President Godswill Akpabio graciously permitted her to proceed.
The lady accused him of improper sexual harassment.
The eye of the storm was still watching.
Senator Akpabio quickly without questions, referred the petition to the Senate ethics and privileges committee.
Bravo, many must have said.
But the Senate has only 4 Women members in a ship of perhaps, over 99 men. And they were sailing on a sea that is at the intersection of the confluence of Sex, politics and power.
Very much unlike the Rwandan parliament.

“No attempt whatsoever to look into the substance of her allegations, but she was summarily suspended and handed this very harsh judgment.
That is the lot of Senator Natasha H Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The senate did not even think of the message they are sending to ‘oga Musa’ who has a shop and has three girls working for him.
Or that school principal who has corp members under him and he must sign their Nysc stuff every month.
If Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan herself can go through this, what hope is there for the rest of us?
This is the reason why I insist that patriarchy knows exactly what it is doing.
Akpabio feels too big to come and defend himself from Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan’s allegations.
The systemic oppression of women in Nigeria has to stop”.
So as Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan carries her heavily oversized cross with the crown of thorns to her Golgotha in this season of fasting at Lent, she must have let a tear or two drop on her white scarf draped over her head, as the wife of a Delta born high chief of Itsekiri descent.
Her petition has already been torn to shreds within minutes and her summary sentence passed. Even her microphone switched off. The world stopped hearing her.
This is a journey just beginning.
The senate president added the story of the saga of a once upon a time very rich senator who was accused of carrying his wealth on his shoulders into the hallowed chambers of the Senate.
He was once suspended for six months. The suspension kept on being renewed and Senator Arthur Nzeribe ended up being on suspension for two years or more.

Well, this is the saga of a story just beginning.
Akpoti Uduaghan must be in sober reflection by now. Her education was not at Obafemi Awolowo University at all. She probably never had heard of a once upon a time Master’s degree student called Monica Osagie.
A professor who also doubled as a priest in a Church was pestering her for sex that she must give, or else she would be forced to continually repeat her academic program with no end in sight.
Until she gave in to the sexual harassment of the powerful professor.

In sexual harassment circumstances, even if a lady were surrounded by her husband and other senators in a room who may swear that such harassment never happened. “I was in the same room with her, her husband and the alleged offender.
Such a thing never happened”.
Monica Osagie knew that there are circumstances you simply cannot prove. You would be shot down in seconds on that sea.
But she knew what to do.
Flip out her phone, call the professor. Lower the voice to a sweet pitch and frequency and once she got her quarry on the line, she pressed the record button. Even calls the man’s name and title in a dramatic fashion.

As the audio trended on the Internet, those that would have shouted ”crucify Monica Osagie as we crucified Monica Lewinsky” changed their beat and their music to, no! We don’t tolerate that in this sacred institution.
Suspend him, suspend him!
The last the world heard was that the professor spent nearly two years in jail for sexual harassment.
Monica Osagie got her Master’s degree on a platter of gold and the professor/priest forfeited his phone to the court. He lost his job as a University professor and the overwhelming shame has dissuaded him from strutting his feathers on the streets of Ile-Ife.
