I remember the late Nobel Laureate,Garcia Marquez, author of ‘100 Years Of Solitude’ and his meeting with Bill Clinton at Martha’s Vineyard before Clinton became the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001.

Bill Clinton who was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in law in 1994 first opened my eyes to how voraciously some American Presidents put time aside to study. His encounter with Marquez revealed his in-depth knowledge of writers and even their countries of origin.

Clinton had read ‘100 Years of Solitude’ and had declared it his favorite book of all times. Marquez heard and riposted that the opinion was targeted at the Latino voters because the election was looming.

Obama – memoirs

Incredibly, Clinton heard but said nothing until his meeting with Marquez many months later at Martha’s Vineyard and as they pumped hands, he said to the author that he meant every word he had spoken about the place of the author and the book in his heart.

Marquis was born a Colombian but he lived and wrote in Mexico.

Barack Obama has given his favorite list of books for the Summer.

“ I’ve read some great books over the last few months and wanted to share some of my favorites. Let me know if you have any recommendations for books I should check out!”

Meanwhile the post on his favorite books list had garnered 12 million views after 22 hours with 6.3k comments, 11k retweets and 94k likes.

World of Statistics then commented:

1. Only 32% of the US population reads books for pleasure.

2. The average American reads only 12 books per year.
3. 42% of college graduates never read another book after college.

4. Reading for just six minutes can reduce stress levels by 68%.

5. Reading can increase empathy and emotional intelligence.

6. Children who are read to at home have a higher success rate in school.

7. Reading can improve sleep quality.

8. Reading can increase vocabulary and improve writing skills.
9. Reading can improve mental focus and concentration.
10. Reading can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Happy reading.
