Some foreign and local election observers say that Nigeria had a real chance to improve on its electoral image, but the nation flunked it through several recorded malpractices.

“Proven competence has been displayed in one thing after all: rigging elections. They put together a team of accomplished election riggers and they’ve done the job. How I wish they could deploy the same strategy for the economy – get competent people to do the job. Then I’d be willing to condone him, despite his nepotism and parochialism. Security forces, thugs and violence have been used to disrupt and cancel elections in opposition strongholds, collation figures delayed and altered. It has been a total farce of an election.

I fear our democracy has been lost, if something drastic is not done to overhaul the system, as every subsequent incumbent will likely deploy the same template to stay in service. I think we should institute a six-year, single-term presidency to mitigate the effects of an incumbent using the enormous powers of the presidency to finagle himself or herself back into office”, according to a critical piece circulating in the social media.
