Media reports state that gunmen opened fire at Owo, Ondo State in South West Nigeria where the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu have been most vociferous about the menace of bandits and kidnappers disguised as Fulani herdsmen. He had issued instructions that they should quit the forests in the state.

State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu expresses sadness:

Though it has not yet been officially established who the assailants are, fingers are being pointed in the direction of bandits who have been tormenting Nigerians since the days of slavery and into the creation of the nation now known as Nigeria by the British.

Blood donors are currently being sought to save lives first.

President Muhammadu Buhari has also condemned the attack.

Attacks have been ongoing all over the federation. A Kaduna bound train that departed from Abuja was attacked weeks ago. Scores were killed and some were kidnapped by the bandits who brazenly show videos of their victims, threatening to kill them unless the government meets their demands.

Tweets condemning the vicious massacre are being released by concerned Nigerians.

The brutal massacre is not only close to home, it happened in St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, the hometown of the State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu who was also one of the frontline champions of Amotekun, the South West Nigerian Vigilanté outfit to check murders, kidnappings, banditry and other vices that have bedeviled the South West as well as other regions of the country.

Governors of the South West had come together to launch the Amotekun Vigilanté outfit for security factors.

It is highly unlikely that massacres of this nature would discourage the leaders of the South West and force them to accommodate criminal elements in their midst, unless they change their ways.

Still every decent person is worried about any negative impact on innocent and peace loving Nigerians who share ethnicity with the alleged gunmen.
