Congratulations to Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, the winner of the 2017 #MissUniverse competition

Nel-Peters beat over 90 contestants to become the second South African ever to win the title.

It’s her first time in the United States, so she plans to visit the Empire State Building.
“I’ve already moved in, so I’m already a New Yorker for the year.”

Nel-Peters says the confidence she exuded during the pageant was well-honed.
“You visualise how you walk on that stage, how you’ll answer your final question and attend events … it makes it so much easier to be there because it feels like you’ve been there before.”

The Miss Universe winner has told Eyewitness News she doesn’t believe that women have to choose beauty over brains or vice versa.
The 22-year-old says she’s looking forward to keeping gender equality at the forefront of her reign.

“I think the time where women have to choose between beauty or brains is over. Women no longer have to choose between the two. You can have both and beauty pageants are breaking that stereotype. I hope to do the same.”

Nel-Peters will spend the next year based in New York City. Nel-Peters admits she’ll miss home while she’s away. “Right now it’s nearly summer in South Africa and I’m missing that so much.”
