Easily one of the most beloved former governors in the history of Nigeria since 1999, Peter Obi from Anambra State, the only zone in the Southern part of Nigeria to produce a democratically elected executive president in the country has formally declared to run for Nigeria’s presidency.

Peter Obi had filed behind former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as vice presidential candidate in 2019. The bid was unsuccessful.

The fact that then presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar wasted no time in picking him as vice presidential candidate testifies to the fact that Obi is a credible candidate.

Three years ago, Peter Obi was a vice presidential candidate. Today he has stepped up to run for the presidency. His former senior partner, Atiku Abubakar has also thrown his hat into the ring, seeking for the same ticket of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Seeking for the nomination will pitch him against Peter Obi but sympathies lie with the ex-Anambra State governor for his sterling performance on the state’s economy, security, selfless leadership and overall prosperity.

Besides, the PDP sentiments are for the presidency to move to the South. Especially the South East where Peter Obi hails from.

Atiku Abubakar is up in battle against zoning that he supported years ago and for which he led renegade PDP governors to work against the party’s candidate, then President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Atiku led the rebellious governors into the then opposition party, the All Progressive Congress, APC. Feeling not trusted, they finally retraced their steps back to the PDP, a party they helped bring down to it’s knees. Today they seek it’s ticket.

The next few months would indicate who the PDP candidate would be. Atiku Abubakar from the north or Peter Obi from the south. Delegates would decide this.
