In 2022 came a report that The General Medical Council which licenses and maintains the official register of medical practitioners in the United Kingdom licensed at least 266 Nigerian doctors in June and July 2022, according to The PUNCH .
A monitor of the GMC register indicated that the number of Nigeria-trained doctors in the UK stood at 9,976 in 2022.
The figure does not include other doctors of Nigerian origin who did not undergo medical training in Nigeria.
Presently, Nigeria has the third highest number of foreign doctors working in the UK after India and Pakistan.
Other popular destinations for Nigeria-trained doctors include the United States, Canada, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Australia.
Nigeria continues to educate, train and export medical practitioners for the global health industry that is booming in great economies of the world that have the capacity to not only build but also maintain world class medical facilities that attract patients from all over the world. It is business that doesn’t occur in derelict government hospitals made so by politicians who have no culture to maintain and improve infrastructure.
Here’s Peter Obi in a tweet:
Today, in furtherance of my unwavering commitment to critical and measurable areas of development – health, education, and lifting people out of poverty – I visited Our Lady of Lourdes College of Nursing Sciences, Ihiala.
During my visit, I took stock of their progress and was pleased to witness the positive outcomes of our ongoing support, the most recent being the ₦20 million I donated a few months ago to aid their efforts.
In recognition of their commendable work, I made an additional donation of ₦10 million today, with the promise of continued support.
Thereafter, I visited the Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital in Oraifite, a world-class medical facility specializing in cardiovascular diseases, built by the Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation.
This facility, working in collaboration with the VOOM Foundation, is doing remarkable work in saving lives. I was truly impressed to learn that they have completed 117 open-heart surgeries, 2 vascular surgeries, and 10 interventional cardiology procedures.
These milestones represent an immediate and substantial contribution to improving healthcare and saving lives, thereby supporting a healthier and more prosperous society.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Sir Emeka Okwuosa and the VOOM Foundation for their extraordinary dedication. As I have often stated, we can collectively build a better society where the needs of children, the vulnerable, and the underprivileged are met.
We must all work hard and sacrifice for a new Nigeria that is possible. -PO
