It may sound strange to hear that Tiv people who form one of the largest ethnic communities in Nassarawa state that existed there long before states creation, are still wallowing in total neglect characterized through many forms of ill treatments, Labaran Maku has observed.

Since it was created in 1996, succeeding governments did not do much in according them the desired recognition, apart from using their numerical strengths to score political ambitions, and in the end, abandoning them.

The circumstances, the Governorship Candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Comrade Labaran Maku observed as unfair treatment.

He observed that it is worrisome to note that the state did not create a single Chiefdom for the Tiv people in Nasarawa State to use as a link and contact point. Adding that “Tiv tribe is the only major ethnic race in Nasarawa State that has no Chiefdom”, promising that if elected, the issues affecting them would be addressed.

Our Correspondent reports that Labaran Maku made this position known during a public function at Angon, in Obi Local Government Council, where he said it was overdue for the Tiv people who are indigenes of the state to have their own chiefdom.

According to him “you cannot get chiefdom in a situation where you are now scattered everywhere, if you elect APGA, we shall first bring you back from wherever some of you have fled to and thereafter we shall give you a chiefdom”.

Maku who stated that the Tiv ethnic group has suffered a lot of injustice than any other tribe in the state, said between 2001 and 2018, the people have experienced not less than three deadly crises that have led to the death of many, properties destroyed and many have fled their homes.

Maku assured that upon his election, his administration will not tolerate anyone that carries arms against another, no matter the person’s tribe or religion.

“Your safety is my concern, the safety of the people of Nasarawa state is my concern, therefore, my administration will not tolerate anyone that carries arms against another, no matter your tribe or religion and l want to assure you that within 100 days of my government, there will be peace even in the bush” he added.

He called on the people to be wise in deciding who to vote for while avoiding acts of retaliation for the purpose of continuing the current relative peace.

Earlier, a chieftain of the party in the area, Francis lyua who praised the Governorship candidate for his concern for the Tiv people in the state, assured that his people will do the needful during the forthcoming general elections.

The occasion also witnessed the inauguration of the leadership of APGA, Tiv Forum in the state.
