President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria.

During a speaking engagement, Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu narrated the story of his friend who owns 5 Rolls Royce Cars that all automobile connoisseurs know are not only pretty expensive but equally guzzle fuel at a very high rate.

The president said that he saw him recently driving a Japanese car, precisely a Honda that is believed to guzzle less petrol. So he asked his friend: what happened to your Rolls Royce?

Watch:

It was obvious that the friend transitioned to a Honda car to save on fuel costs especially as the government had removed the subsidy on petrol.

“We cannot continue to waste our resources lavishly”. That is just as good as saying that the subsidy was removed for the price to go up in order to stop frivolous and wasteful expenditure on what God has endowed us with.

President Tinubu is without a doubt a patriot who was amongst those that confronted the military junta of General Sani Abacha. He even went on exile and only came back in time enough to help birth a democratic Republic.

He truly loves Nigeria.

Subsidies that help check hyper inflation were removed by the government and this has spiralled into an unprecedented cost of living crisis that has pushed a lot of Nigerians into economic migration with their skills and less number of citizens to build Nigeria with.

If President Tinubu’s banter with his friend revealed anything, it shows only a part of the problem, unfortunately.

His policies mean that indeed Nigeria would spend less petrol, but stifle travel and even economic activities. Inflation would continue to be a problem.

Despite all the problems people are facing, there is a sizable population of Nigerians who would never migrate. Whatever happens.

So what is being done to encourage them ?

And if the entire aim is to help the citizenry, the government can go a lot further to solve the intractable electricity crisis that has bedevilled the country right from Independence. A growing population with declining power supply.

Secondly, the nation has to move into the continuous makeover of the road network. Let the improvements never go down.

Nigeria should transition into electric cars production. Let Nigerians who do not believe in leaving their homeland have the benefits of modern living that others are benefiting abroad. Having the conveniences of electric automobiles would automatically reduce the cost of movement, which will impact positively on inflation.

The world is throttling plans into driverless cars, which will definitely lower the cost of movement either for leisure or economic activities.

That we are a crude oil producing nation should not tie us down to that economy forever. If the world is changing, let’s fall in line and grow like the rest of the world.
