Bandits tormenting a captive in northern Nigeria as they demand for a 50 million naira ransom or they kill the victim.

During the events that preceded the Nigerian Civil War, the war itself and efforts at reconciliation, the North Central part of the country, sometimes called the Middle Belt played an outsized role in the prosecution of the war and the search for peace under General Yakubu Gowon as Head of State from 1966 to 1975.

The people of the North Central were seen as largely fearless and courageous, forming a huge chunk of the Armed Forces of Nigeria then.

Therefore when news started filtering out that in less than fifty years, the citizenry that make up Benue, Plateau where valiant military heroes have come out from including from a few other states were being killed in large numbers as well as being driven out of their villages into Internally Displaced People’s Camps, IDPs, mouths were agape.

Videos made by the people terrorizing other Nigerians through kidnapping for ransom, brutalization and killing in bushes have started circulating online.

Nigerians now know that the terrorists carrying out these dastardly acts are mainly fearless Fulani Youths, trained from childhood as gunmen. They are not even afraid of showing their faces boldly in videos, telling the world what terrorist camps that they belong to.

Worse still, they fearlessly move about with military grade weapons that are not supposed to be in the hands of civilians, talk less of fearless and drug crazed teenagers aged between 14 or less to 19 or 20. Perhaps with a few of them, slightly older.

Fulanis have been in the business of kidnapping and enslaving others since pre colonial times according to the publications of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa at the beginning of the last century even before he became the only Prime Minister Nigeria ever produced, and also the writings of Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowder over a hundred years ago.

With growing proficiency in handling weapons in the hands of the youths, even the military may not be able to contain them, making society face anarchy if something urgent is not done to stop the ongoing and looming threats. Unless something is urgently done now.
