Come December 10, 2022 and women of Delta State seem set to gather in Asaba the state capital to support one of their gender, Nwabogo Umukoro who is running in the 2023 governorship election as deputy governorship candidate under Labour Party.
“This is the first time that a front runner party is giving a slot to us women and we’re not taking this for granted”, Mrs Ighomena James told The Oasis Reporters on the phone from Oleh, Isoko South Local Government Area.
“Women constitute more than half of actual voters on ground and it is inconceivable that we are seen as pall rice, eaten only when there’s no other choice. This has to change. That’s one reason we are turning up in Asaba for the one million women March for Nwabogo in this significant step for women to be heard and seen”, Akpewe Leonard from Igbudu market told our correspondent in Warri, Delta State.
Ndokwa born Nwabogo Umukoro who is running for the deputy governorship slot of Labour Party is a professor in University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Nwabogo also holds the enviable distinction of being the first woman to be on any governorship platform in Delta State, even though there are more women in the state than men.
Women have been deputy governors in Nigeria’s South West and also in Anambra State.
But this is the first time it is going to happen in Delta State, if Labour Party wins the governorship election in February 2023.
Actually going by the euphoria on ground and the disarray over acrimonious outcome of their primaries in PDP and APC, chances are bright for governorship candidate Deacon Ken Kawhariebie Pela and Nwabogo Umukoro as his running mate.
